The Ultimate Face Paint Brush Care Routine: Clean, Protect, and Extend the Life of Your Tools

Let’s be honest: high-quality face painting brushes are an investment. Here at The Facepainting Hub, we carry a beautiful range of professional angled, flat, and round brushes, and we know firsthand that their lifespan entirely depends on how you treat them after the gig is over.

A solid brush care routine is the secret to keeping your kit hygienic, your bristles crisp, and your wallet happy. Here is our foolproof, step-by-step guide to washing and maintaining your tools like a pro!

Learning how to properly clean face paint brushes is the secret to keeping your bristles crisp and your kit hygienic. Whether you are using one-stroke flat brushes or delicate liners, a good brush care routine will save you money and keep your tools performing perfectly.

Here is our step-by-step guide to washing and maintaining your face painting brushes:

1. Rinse in Warm Water Start by rinsing your brushes in warm water. Crucial tip: Never let the water go past the end of the ferrule (the metal bit that holds the bristles). If water gets inside, it can dissolve the glue and ruin the wooden handle!

2. Apply a Good Brush Soap Load your bristles with a dedicated, professional brush soap. If you don't have one on hand, any gentle, unscented bar soap works brilliantly too.

3. Massage the Bristles Gently massage the brush on a lightly textured makeup brush cleaning mat to work the paint out.

4. Rinse Thoroughly Rinse the soap out completely under warm water, again making sure not to let the water travel past the ferrule.

5. Wipe and Shake Wipe the handles clean, and gently shake the excess water from the bristles.

6. Reshape the Bristles Use your fingers to gently reshape the bristles back to their original crisp shape. If they need a little extra hold, use a tiny bit of bar soap as a "styling gel" to keep the shape while they dry.

7. Air Dry Flat Lay your brushes flat on a piece of kitchen roll, with the bristles overhanging the edge of the worktop so air can circulate around them as they dry.

8. Admire Your Work! Gaze adoringly at their freshly-cleaned beauty before rearranging them in your brush wallet (and, naturally, taking a few photos! 🤣).

To ensure your face painting brushes last as long as possible, keep these golden rules in mind:

  • DO clean thoroughly after every job: Don't let face paint dry deep into the bristles overnight.

  • DON'T leave brushes standing in water: Leaving them soaking in your water cup will quickly ruin the shape, rust the ferrule, and rot the wood.

  • DON'T pack them away wet: Always let them air dry flat. Ideally, dry them upside down so any moisture runs out of the bristles rather than down into the ferrule.

Be good to your brushes, and they will be good to you!
